Original pen and ink editorial cartoon drawing on art card, 1920, published in the Reading Telegraph newspaper (Reading PA), shows returning WWI veterans and ageing veterans of the Civil War, Indian Wars and Spanish-American War trying to pass through barbed wire defences representing ‘salary question’ into No Man's Land and a toward the ‘1920 Budget’ in a trench which thinks ‘that’ll hold ‘em for a while’. The US government was concerned about how to pay for all these veterans and came up with schemes such as bonuses to be paid years later and free medical care and services. The Veterans Bureau would only be set up in 1921. Card size 43 x 36 cm (17 x 14 inch), image size 38 x 30.5 cm, signed lower right with caption in pencil in upper border. In very good condition.
