Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, probably published in the New York Daily Mirror, 1911, shows the British ‘lion’ with his paw resting on a crown representing the House of Lords, and refers to the constitutional crisis of 1911 when the power and reputation of the House of Lords was more than just ‘crumpled’ but finally curtailed through the Parliament Act which prevented the Lords endlessly blocking legislation from the House of Commons. The Act wholly removed the right of the Lords to veto finance bills and effectively meant that the Lords could only delay legislation but not prevent it coming into force. Macauley won the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning in 1929. Framed and matted for an overall size of 56 x 50 cm (22 x 19.5 inch), image size 40 x 35 cm, signed lower right, caption in lower border, inscribed bottom right ‘To Lady Dora, with sincere good wishes, Feb. 1911'. Label of ‘The Frame Center’ of Smithtown, New York on verso. Very good condition.
