Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1940, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a couple walking past a shop and being greeted by the shopkeeper. The wife complains ‘I think it’s rather presumptuous of him to be quite so friendly just because we’ve registered with him for cooking fats’. The ‘Ministry of Food’ had begun rationing in November 1939 and cooking fats were added to the list in July 1940. Class distinctions would be broken down to some extent as a result of the war, but this rather middle class lady is at this point not very happy with the familiarity of the tradesman. Board size 51 x 30 cm (20 x 12 inch), image size 36 x 26 cm, signed lower centre, caption in ink in lower border, numbered 1690, in very good condition.
