Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1943, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a shopkeeper selling ‘part-worn garments’ looking rather tired and saying ‘Ah well! That’s the lot. I might as well shut shop now’, as the last customer disappears with his trousers. Since by 1943 normal consumer goods were hard to come by in wartime Britain and there was rationing, the government issued coupons for just about everything (including clothing), and a ‘no coupons’ sale would guarantee plenty of customers, and this particular individual has even sold the shirt off his back. Board size 40 x 27.5 cm (16 x 11 inch), image size 35 x 26.5 cm, signed lower right, caption in ink in lower border and dated on right border 1-5-43, numbered 2695. Some staining around edges, otherwise in good condition.
