Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1974, shows Uncle Sam worrying about president Nixon’s possible impeachment while looking at a poster of vice-president Ford and thinking: ‘No gags about buying used cars from a guy with that name anyhow!’. In mid-1974 the first steps to impeach Nixon were being taken, and if Nixon were to resign, vice-president Ford would take his place. A Democrat poster campaign in the 1960 Presidential election had used the slogan ‘Would YOU buy a used car from this man?’ together with a photo of Nixon, who later lost the election to Kennedy. If Gerald Ford were to become president, this particular joke could in any case not be used to characterize the man. Card size 31 x 24.5 cm (12 x 10 inch), image size 29 x 22 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border. In very good condition.
