Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1974, shows the UN attempting to douse the volcano of ‘Greco-Turk Cyprus’ in an effort to deal with ‘centuries-old enmity’. In July 1974 Turkish forces invaded and captured 3% of the island before a UN ceasefire was declared. In August 1974 further Turkish invasion resulted in the capture of approximately 40% of the island. The ceasefire line from August 1974 became the United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus and is commonly referred to as the Green Line. The UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus was originally set up in 1964 and is still there today, making it the longest serving UN mission in its history. Card size 31 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 29 x 22 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border, date stamped on verso 15 August 1974. In very good condition.
