Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1973, shows former US president Lyndon B Johnson (‘L-B-J’) riding off into the sunset with ‘Ave atque vale’ written above, referring to the death of Lyndon B Johnson in January 1973, leaving behind him the legacy of the war in ‘Vietnam’. He as president had escalated American involvement in the war after 1964 and the unpopularity of the war had resulted in him not even standing again for the presidency in 1968, and by the time of his death the war had still not been resolved. Hail and Farewell (a translation of ave atque vale, last words of the poem by Roman author Catullus, 101) is a traditional military event whereby those coming to and departing from an organization are celebrated. It is a time to honour those who have departed the unit and thank them for their service. Card size 30 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 24 x 20 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border. In very good condition.
