Original political cartoon on card in pen and ink, published in the Eastern Daily Press, 1969. The huge demonstrations and strikes in France in May 1968 were a severe challenge to Charles de Gaulle, president of France since 1959, and economic problems ‘pressure on franc’ ‘run on gold’ ‘national strike’ and ‘militant workers’ did not improve the situation or his popularity. In 1969 he proposed a nationwide referendum on constitutional changes he wished to make and in a televised speech in April he vowed that if the referendum failed, he would resign his office. The referendum proposal did fail, and de Gaulle resigned the presidency on 28 April 1969. Card size 30 x 24 cm (12 x 9.5 inch), image size 23 x 20 cm, signed lower right, typed caption in lower border. In very good condition.
