Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1940, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a lady visitor questioning two junior RAF ground crew about their war exploits. Their response: ‘No, lady, I haven’t actually brought down any Messerschmitts myself, but I once got an awful telling off for slapping on the back, instead of saluting, a Pilot Officer who has’, suggests that they consider the wrath of a Pilot Officer to be far worse than the danger involved in shooting down enemy aircraft. Board size 54 x 33 cm (21 x 13 inch), image size 36 x 31 cm, signed lower left, caption in ink in lower border and dated 5-9-40, numbered 1873. In very good condition.
