Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1940, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows two British soldiers in Norway using a French phrase book to ask a rather startled Norwegian: ‘Pardonnez moi, Monseer, but voulez-vous directez us a l’estaminet?’ (Excuse me sir, but could you direct us to the pub). Trying to put a positive spin on the Norwegian campaign of the British armed forces aimed mainly at securing the Norwegian port of Narvik before the Germans did so, which ended in failure. Board size 54 x 38 cm (21 x 15 inch), image size 32 x 29 cm, signed lower right, caption in ink in lower border and dated 2-4-40, numbered 1765. Some nibbles and staining around edges, otherwise in good condition.
