Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1942, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a lovelorn man looking at a photo of his girl friend as a munitions worker and saying ‘We were ideally happy until she began earning money on war-work, and then she became madly infatuated with the District Collector of Income Tax’, a reflection on the fact that women going to work and getting out of their homes during wartime gave them much more social freedom. Board size 54 x 38 cm (21 x 15 inch), image size 38 x 31 cm, signed lower right, caption in ink in lower border and dated 7-3-42, numbered 2339. A small portion of the right-hand corner of the board has broken off, otherwise in good condition.
