Original editorial cartoon on board in pen and ink, published in the London Evening News, 1941, as one of the World War Two ‘Smiling Through’ series, shows a woman with an empty basket saying to her husband ‘I’m sorry I’m late George, but I thought I was in a New Potato queue and found myself in the pictures’. Queuing for rationed food was a common experience for people during World War Two and this young wife is trying hard to convince her ageing husband that she had made a mistake and somehow ended up at the cinema (pictures). The original title: ‘New Excuse’ has been changed by the editor. Board size 55 x 40 cm (21.5 x 16 inch), image size 38 x 33 cm, signed lower left, caption in ink in lower border and dated 7-7-41, numbered 2132. Some nibbles and staining around edges, otherwise in good condition.
