Details
Original drawing on paper in pen and ink, around 1961, possibly published in the Saturday Evening Post or the New York Times, of German statesman Willy Brandt. Drawing on white paper is pasted onto a larger piece of paper which states on verso: ‘Kroll Karicature Service, Willy Brandt, Mayor of troubled West Berlin’ and a stamped New York address. Brandt was mayor of West Berlin 1957-66 and this was probably published in 1961 at the moment the Berlin Wall was being built. Kroll, who left Germany in 1933 when the Nazis came to power, became a ‘celebrity caricaturist’ in the USA who drew caricatures of thousands of public figures in America and around the world. Paper size 15 x 10 cm (6 x 4 inch), image size 10 x 6.5 cm, signed lower left. In good condition.
