Original editorial cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, published in the Omaha World Herald, 1989, shows a Chinese protester shackled to a communist ball and chain in a prison cell. The caption reads ‘Deng Xiaoping says the United States was involved in pro-democracy protests in Beijing... He got that right’. The Statue of Liberty is in the thoughts of the chained student. Student protests in Beijing culminated in the Tiananmen Square massacre of June 1989. The Ministry of State Security apparently believed that the Americans were involved in the student protests, and in this cartoon they are, but only in the sense of inspiring ideas of liberty and democracy. Card size 40.5 x 28 cm (16 x 11 inch), image size 33.5 x 20.5 cm, signed lower right and dated November 2, 1989 in pencil in lower border. In excellent condition.
