Details
Original two-panel editorial cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, published in the Omaha World Herald, 1997, shows in the first panel the ‘USSR’ running neck and neck with an American runner in the ‘1960s The Space Race...’ while in the second panel, ‘1990s the Space Relay...’ the exhausted Russian runner can barely hand off the baton to the American. In the 1950s and 1960s the Soviets were in fact ahead of the Americans in the space race (Sputnik, first man in space), although the Americans moved ahead in the later 1960s with the Apollo Program. The space relay refers to the Russian-American cooperation aboard the Russian Mir space station during the 1990s which, because of the economic chaos in Russia and their underfunding of the project, proved risky and became accident-prone. Card size 38 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inch), image size 32 x 21.5 cm, signed and dated lower left. In excellent condition.
