Original brush and ink editorial cartoon drawing on art card, probably 1914, published in the New York Sun, shows a neutral Uncle Sam being confronted with the demands of John Bull (Britain, ‘Protest’), Poincaré(?) (France, ‘Atrocity’) and the German Kaiser Wilhelm. Despite staying out of the war when it began, the American government was assailed right from the start by all the European states involved. The Kaiser for instance sent a telegram as early as 7 September 1914 protesting the use of ‘dum dum’ bullets (banned by international law) by the Belgians and the Germans in turn were accused by the Belgians and French of committing atrocities in occupied territories.
