Original brush and ink editorial cartoon drawing on art card, 1914, published in the New York Sun, shows Jeanne d’Arc rising from the ashes of Rheims Cathedral, which had been largely destroyed by German shelling, and symbolizing a renewed spirit of resistance among the French people. Although Cesare was against American involvement in WWI, this cartoon seems very pro-French and, by implication, anti-German. (The cartoon was included in Cesare's book "100 Cartoons" published in 1916, p. 41, and also reproduced in “De Oorlog in Prent” by Jan Feith, published 1915 in the Netherlands by Scheltens & Giltay, page 87). Signed lower right, card size 60 x 47.5 cm. Framed in simple wooden frame, somewhat age-toned, water stain bottom right not affecting image. In overall fair condition.
