Original political cartoon from 1934 in charcoal and pen on paper with white-out, by the editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Sun-Times, Jacob Burck. Burck (1904-1982) was considered a radical cartoonist, having worked for the Daily Worker and the New Masses, and was a staunch supporter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. In March 1934 Roosevelt set up the National Recovery Review Board which was headed by noted criminal lawyer Clarence Darrow. The cartoon shows Roosevelt presenting the Darrow Report to General Hugh S. Johnson, who was the head of the National Recovery Administration (NRA), which the report suggested abolishing. The NRA would not long after be declared unconstitutional. Johnson is clearly not happy about the report and wants to ‘kill’ it. Inscribed at bottom left by Burck “To Clarence Hathaway with Revolutionary greetings from a comrade and co-worker - Jacob Burck - 1934.” The caption is printed on a sticker on the rear of the frame. In a simple frame, the artwork measures 41 x 38 cm (16 x 15 inch). Age toning. Reproduced on p. 109 of “Hunger and Revolt: Cartoons by Burck” published by the Daily Worker, 1935.
