Details
Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez were born in Oxnard, California, just north of Los Angeles. Gilbert in 1957 and Jaime in 1959. Their mother had been an avid comic book reader in her youth and both parents encouraged them to draw from an early age. The Hernandez brothers grew up immersed in a typical lowbrow media bath, which included cheap horror and science fiction movies, TV wrestling, rock and roll music, Famous Monsters of Filmland, and all sorts of comic books. As they grew up their drawing styles had less and less to do with the conventional comics of the time. Both credit the punk rock movement of the late '70s with broadening their horizons and leading them to reflect their personal experience in their cartoons. Neither had seriously considered cartooning as a career until their older brother Mario enlisted them in as self-published comic book that would be called Love & Rockets. They submitted the finished product to The Comics Journal, a magazine noted for its demanding criticism of the medium, and got not only a flowing review but a publisher as well. Since then the readership of Love & Rockets has grown steadily, their work has been translated into four languages, and the name of their magazine has been swiped by an English pop band. Gilbert lives with is wife Carol in Woodland Hills; Jaime is single and still lives in Oxnard. Since 1987, all three have performed in the band Nature Boy.
