Probably one of the first French editions of the L'Attaque game, which is generally seen as the predecessor of the later Stratego. A number of versions of this game are therefore included in the Stratego catalog to illustrate the early history prior to the first release of Mogendorff. The game was invented in 1908 by Mademoiselle Hermance Edan and on February 5, 1909 the French patent was issued under number 396.795. Hermance Edan did not name the game yet (the patent describes it as "Jeu de bataille avec pièces mobile sur damier" but in 1910 the game was marketed by an as yet unknown publisher under the name L'Attaque. The game pieces are cardboard cards with the images of the soldiers in the uniform of the country in question. There are several countries that acted as opponents of France. The version depicted is French against Americans, but there are also versions in which against the English (common in the later English L'Attaque games), Spaniards, Prussians, Dutch and also French are in competition with each other. The French L'Attaque games are a rare appearance. In this French version there is a game board at the bottom of the storage box, but there is also a separate game board. The nice thing about this game board is that each playing surface is covered by a cotton ribbon in the colors of the French flag. The pieces could be pushed underneath so that they would not fall over during the game. The manual is pasted on the inside of the lid and is of course in French. The back of the French cards is brown and that of the American cards is green. The sides are gold colored. This game and the information about it come from Rob de Jong.
