Details
This small area is located to the East of Lisbon at the mouth of the Tagus River and covers part of the municipalities both Cascais and Oeiras. It produces a fortified wine known as "Vinho Generoso". The Carcavelos wine is linked with the history since the 18th century, when the Marquês de Pombal once owned this once great vineyard and the winery. The wine has high alcohol content, Topaz-colored with a nutty aroma and slightly dry. It was popular with the Duke of Wellington's officers during the Napoleonic war. On board is the high price fetched for this wine at auction house Christie's in London in 1769. The labels are Carcavelos and Quinta dos Pesos
