Prototype: These locomotives were used by the PLM in 1898 to run express trains from Paris to the Côte d'Azur. The locomotives are fitted with streamline plating at the chimney, the smoke box door and the driver's cab because of the Mistral in the Rhône Valley, which the trains often had to struggle against. The locomotives had the nickname: "Coupe-Vent" (Windbreaker). These are four-cylinder compound locomotives. The locomotives bore the numbers C61 to C180. They were more powerful than their 1894 C-series predecessors, hence the name Grosse C (Big C). The last loco entered service in 1936. Loc C142 has been preserved in the museum in Mulhouse.
