Frank viscount De Winne (Ghent, April 25, 1961) is a Belgian astronaut. In 2002 he spent more than eight days on board the International Space Station. With that space flight he became the second Belgian astronaut (Dirk Frimout was the first). He was later ennobled, with the title of viscount. He also holds the military rank of brigadier general. On May 27, 2009, he was launched into space for the second time, as a flight engineer, accompanied by the Russian Soyuz commander Roman Romanenko and the Canadian Robert Thirsk for a six-month stay on the International Space Station. During the last two months of the mission, De Winne was the first commander of the ISS not from Russia or the United States. On December 1, De Winne returned to earth.
