Mah Jongg sets with tiles are seldom used for advertising. Card versions of the game however are. A fine example of this is the English Electrical Mah Jong (1923). A special edition for an electricity company produced by maybe England’s most famous printer who is a.o. well known for its playing cards. The gilt-edged cards (50x80mm) make no use of the traditional Mah Jongg characters. Instead they show images of the products of the client: radio tubes stand for Bamboo, electric cables for Dots and telephone appliances for Characters. The wind cards show people from N., S., E. and W. struggling with gusts of wind. The seasons depict a range of telephones from old to “modern” and several logo’s of the company. The set, in a box covered with fake crock-leather, is as new.
