At the beginning of the 1980s, Serge Clerc was the pope of “rock” BD. His graphic compositions, set against a background of milk-bars, are iconic images of Parisian nightlife. The creator of “Phil Perfect” was a great fan of the crime dramas of American cinema’s golden age. He was the first artist to be approached by Eric Verhoest and Thomas Spitaels, founders of Champaka. Serge Clerc suggested to them that he do a portfolio of imaginary book-covers for paperbacks (cheap crime novels). The shadowy presence of Johnny Bahamas, private detective and the hero of these detective novels, stalks the dimly lit streets of 1940s Los Angeles. In the space of eight imaginary detective novel covers, Serge Clerc pays homage to the heroes of the genre, Sam Spade, Philip Marlowe and others of that ilk.
