After WW II there was a limited but steady demand for the soft-top VWs produced by the coachbuilder Josef Hebmüller, but in 1949 a disastrous fire at the works brought production to an end with just 695 cabriolets having been build. Work was then placed with Osnabrück coachbuilders Wilhelm Karmann, who were the only official builders of the VW Cabriolet turning out some 330.000 units before production ceased in 1979.
