Rover conducted some very prescient market research in 1964, which predicted that 4x4 station wagons would become the fastest growing segment of the American car market. When they secured the rights to an aluminium 3.5 litre V8 that General Motors no longer wanted they had the power plant to mate with the station wagon shape they had been experimenting with for some years. Chief engineer Spen King came up with the first vehicle in the world that worked properly as a road car but was also a great off road. Stylist David Bache drew a shape so pure and simple it was exhibited in art museums as modern sculpture and all of a sudden June 17th 1970 a new type of car was born.
