In 1922 Herbert Austin announced his ‘Baby’ car. This was the Austin Seven. The model went through four updates before production of the first series ended in 1939. Twenty years later, in 1959, another small Austin car took the motoring world by surprise for its ingenuity, performance and economy, selling for just over £500, including purchase tax. This time it was christened the Austin Se7en. It was the revolutionary concept of Alec Issigonis, chief designer of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) which had been formed in 1952 through a merger of Austin Motor Company and the Nuffield Group, the latter comprising the marques of Morris, MG, Wolsely and Riley. Simultaneously with the announcement of the Austin Se7en came a second version of the car under the name Morris Mini-Minor. Almost immediately both versions acquired the popular name ‘Mini’ and in 1969 the name was taken as a marque for the car in its own right, with ‘Austin’ and ‘Morris’ omitted. Limited edition with certificate.
