The PlayStation started as a joint project between Sony and Nintendo for the development of a CD based system for the Super Famicom/SNES. When Nintendo ended the partnership (to start coöperating with Philips on the CDi platform), Sony decided to produce their own video game console : the PlayStation. It soon became the most popular video game platform with a total sales of over 100 million units. In 2000 a restyled and smaller version was released : the PS One.
