Explanation by Marc Legendre: This drawing comes from an album and Kris Onzea from the Onzea printing company would print the card. At that time we could just walk up to the presses and often worked a few hours to keep costs down or to speed things up. Jan Bosschaert also had something printed there regularly, it was a nice atmosphere and Kris was always up for 'a special' (a piece of paper or a layer of varnish or something). The card would be printed in offset, but the offset press was broken. Then Kris decided to print them in intaglio. There was an old platen press that they used to print death notices, which could be used. In this process you start from a copper plate on which the image is 'etched'. The result is much more beautiful, warmer and more sensitive than with offset. That suited the atmosphere of the drawing well. There was no time to print my address etc. on the back and even the time to cut away the white was missing. That's why it looks a bit strange, I think. But with that white, I could always add a little text. That made it a bit more personal than a real address card.
