Details
Nintendo started as a developer of (arcade) games. Their first video game console was the Famicom (Family Computer), which was only released in Asia. Later on they tried to make a deal with Atari to commercialize this unit in the USA. Negotiations failed and Nintendo decided to distribute it themselves in the USA and Europe. It was renamed NES (Nintendo Entertainment System). Many popular game series such as Mario, Donkey Kong and Zelda were released and the NES became the best selling video game console in the period 1985-1990. Nintendo continued the production of the NES even in the early nineties when much more powerful 16 bit consoles were released by the competitors. In 1991 the Sega Genesis replaced the NES as most popular console. In 1991 the successor, the 16 bit Super NES was released.
