The Sega Master System is an 8 bit Third Generation console that dominated the market together with the Nintendo NES during the period 1985-1990.
It was first released in 1985 in Japan with the name Mark III. In the USA (1986) and Europe (1987) it was sold with the name Master System.
It was a huge success in Europe. In the USA it was outsold by the NES.
The Master System I had a conventional cartridge connector, but also a slot for game cards. The later connector was removed from the later Master System II (a budget version that was introduced in 1990) and games were finally only released on cartridges.
The Master System was replaced by the Genesis/Mega Drive in 1989 (USA)/1990 (Europe).
