Details
The Nintendo Game Boy was released in 1998 and is the most successful handheld game console ever. It was succeeded in 1998 by the Game Boy Color. A total of nearly 120 million units were sold.
The Game Boy was Nintendo’s first handheld with rechangeable game cartridges and was inspired by the Game & Watch series. It had an 8 bit Z80 processor and a monochrome screen.
Although at the moment of introduction or soon after a variety of other technically superior color handhelds (Atari Lynx, Sega Game Gear, NEC PC Engine GT) became available, the Game Boy dominated the handheld market and eventually forced the competition to abandon their models. Main reason was the price and the availability of popular games.
