The Sega 32X is an add-on for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and the Sega Mega CD. It is an expansion module that can be plugged into the cartridge slot of the Mega Drive/Genesis. It is connected to the main console with a special cable and has a separate power supply. The aim was to improve the performance of the 16 bit Genesis/Mega Drive and to prolong its lifespan. The 32X contains two 32 bit RISC processors. Because of the release of ‘real’ 32 bits units such as the Sega Saturn and Sony Playstation and even 64 bits units (N64) and the shift towards CD-Rom based systems production of the 32X was discontinued (1995) soon after its release. It is remarkable that even thought the system was a commercial failure, its 15th birthday was celebrated by Sega by the release (31/3/2010) of an audio-cd with the tunes of various 32X games. A total of 32 32X games were released on cartridges and also 6 CD-Rom games.
