#406425 lists a nominal value of 20 and 30.
At the moment LD is filled in: 20+30.

This is not correct, however, because 20 is the postage value and 30 is the total sales price (so a surcharge of 10). The notation: 20+10 is technically correct, but also contrary to the stamp handbook because it is not written that way on the stamp.

What is the correct input method for the face value of this stamp?

And what about these values?
Or this series, which has twice the same value?

stripspeldjes I think the same applies to that stamp.
The asterisk that is filled in there is, according to the manual, meant when the same nominal value is expressed in two currencies.

Indeed. What it says is wrong stripspeldjes

Value: only if the item is one stamp, enter what is visible (also for a block with one stamp).
Entered value for series (more than 1 loose), sheets, FDC, Maximum card, ... :  not ok. Do not enter anything with those items. Also no 2x5 or 3*5.
Exception: booklet or folder where a total (sales) value is printed on the booklet/folder itself. That 'value' can be entered there. Otherwise leave empty (no calculations or mathematical operations, because that is not there).
If there are 2 values on the seal of an item, use the asterisk. eg. at 5 and 45 you enter 5*45.

Helv I clearly see 20+30 on the stamp. Is that the value? No idea. But you have to think from the standpoint of a user who has this seal and wants to search for it. It has a 20 on it, a + (whether it's meant as + or a red cross doesn't matter), and a 30.  It will first search in the group '20+30'.
It's up to to do the search functionality. It has nothing to do with a value as such. What's the easiest way to find that stamp?
Therefore: literally what it says (without spaces or other tricks).

Raoul62 I think a Red Cross symbol is really different from a plus sign.
There are also sites that (wrongly) see the red crescent moon on the right instead of a 0.

I can follow your train of thought, however, to enter a + as standard with a surcharge stamp .

There will always be doubts and gray areas. Just try to think as neutrally as possible from a basic collector's point of view. What would he think it says? In which group will it search first?
Searching via 'face value' is by far the most powerful weapon against duplication.
Unfortunately, 10 years ago it was not searchable, and it was only a field 'in decoration'. Other than that it was of no use. The (powerful) filter option has been in production for less than a year. And with that came the realization of the importance of the content in that field. But meanwhile there were already about 700,000 items in the stamp section. Hence the many 'errors' and unnecessary spaces. With time and a sandwich, that will all be resolved. If everyone gets 10 nominal values right every day... Each one step closer to optimal utilization. Less chance of duplication. That's how I look at it.

In 2001 you received stamps with two face values: in cents and in euros. The manual prescribes that you write them down in the order in which you find them on the stamp. How logical is that? It is much more obvious to write down the values in chronological order: first the old (in cents) then the new (euros). At the moment this is handled differently in the catalog.

Oops, I must confess that I remembered that wrong. I have swapped the old and euro values for some stamps without paying attention to the order on the stamp. For example, #4502365. It also seemed obvious to me to put the old value (which is usually printed larger and which was valid on the issue date) at the front.

I now also see that there is an exception in the Handbook for the nominal value on Vending machine stamps (10.5). I also changed that wrong two or three times. If I can figure out where that was I will correct it myself.

For us it is obvious that Frank is older than Euro. For someone from Somalia, that will be less ready knowledge.
I don't know it outside of certain African countries either. If I see one seal that has two values (an old and a new one) on it during a transition phase, which currency is the old one and which one is the new one. Can I knock on your door if I don't know? :)
I know one by heart: for Congo Kinshasa. There it was first c (cent) and f (franc), then Z (zaire), s (Sengi) and k (makuta), then NZ (nouveau zaire) and then FC (franc).

The is a simple convention in the handbook that anyone without any knowledge of the subject can apply. Copy in the order they appear on the stamp.
I don't think any schoolmaster's index finger can match that?

Or should we use a video clip to describe what we mean by sequence? From left to right and from top to bottom. You will only have a problem with direction and orientation as a stamp collector....

Do Congo Kinshasa stamps also appear simultaneously on stamps?
The transition to the Euro was only a very limited period.
And if you literally follow the manual, how many different nominal notations do you get with a series if #550969 ? Insane design.

(By the way, you can't see – off topic – in the series that all these stamps are continuous. You can see at the blok. Too bad you can only enter such information in the Details field.)

Raoul62 "Copy in the order they appear on the stamp".
I find it illogical and therefore disagree with the manual on this point.

Well, but at least there is a clear rule for this in the manual. Something that's been supposed to be followed like this for over 10 years.
Changing a rule is looking at a few hundred thousand items to see if it isn't a two-valued seal, and then adjusting it.

Those who set the rules don't follow them (because they don't know the manual), you won't convert them by changing the rules. And they won't pay for any additional work that a change of course would entail.

Feel free to make an effort to have it adjusted. Then I'll follow the new spelling. But now it says so, and I follow. A deal is a deal.
And there are indeed many users who add according to the agreements. It's not all bad.

If an appointment changes, then in a year's time no one will know that it was different before. and then 'gross mistakes' are thrown on the forum ... which were not mistakes at the time they were made.

Again, it is not about a 'value' in the strict sense of the word, nor about a historically justified order. Or whatever intelligence rationale you'd like to put into it.
It's about creating search groups. To make it easier to find a (post) stamp. As a result, there is less chance of duplication.
Put in the shoes of a (simple) stamp collector who wants to search for a stamp on LD. The handbook now says: ... (should everyone know lol).
#304545
He sees 2 values on the stamp: it says 0, 39 and then 0.85.
Doesn't care about politics, economics, profound backgrounds or whatever. He wants to find that seal. And searches in the search group '0.39*0.85'.
Not found! Quickly add that stamp! Very satisfied user: I added something on LD. Well, in your dreams. In 10 years, they will receive a message that the item has been removed because it turns out to be a duplicate. Could also take 12 years, or even longer...
Well, the item was reversed in the group '0.85 * 0.39', with spaces in between.
If only everyone had their thing does and thinks he is the inventor of hot water...  No, then you are far from half as smart as you think you are.

If you manage your collection for yourself in an Excel Workbook Then you can do whatever you want in it. Doesn't hurt anyone.
At LD we work together, we build together, on something that is open to everyone with a heart for collecting. And then appointments are not a luxury. Every appointment is a choice. Choosing is losing. One is against, the other for. Reverse the agreement, and then the proponents are against, and the opponents are for.
But the agreements should not be followed only by the proponents. No, because then we'll make a mess of it.

With the asterisk sign indicating different currencies (as we have known with the change to euro) there MUST be spaces.

Mag/ should that be listed with the Nominal value?

Then I think that according to the spirit of the manual '3.40' may be mentioned. The total value. As is sometimes stated on a booklet.
Not the entire calculation of course.
But it is not very useful to mention it for a block or booklet.

It is mainly about the individual items, the heap of thousands that sometimes has to be searched. To make that easier.
Nothing else is done with the contents of that field, nothing is calculated with it. It doesn't even determine the order (the 'sequence number in the issue' field does that).

Blocks and booklets, there are a lot less of them.

Select by country / year / stamp ... multiple screens  ... usually. Is difficult to find. With the search function by face value it is almost always much simpler (Japan is the exception).
Select by country / year / block (or sheet, or booklet, ...) and you can find the right item at a glance.

To return to the original question: just mention 20+30, that gives beginners the best chance of finding a stamp.
For experts, who take the trouble to read the background page for the country Latvia, you can mention there that the allowance series from the period 1918-1940 always mention two values. Namely the postage value and the sales value.

All of Latvia is also through (so we use the + because it is not a different currency).

PS On that block it says in the margin 6xƒ1.25= ƒ7.50=€3.40
Can/should that be included in the Nominal value?
And for those who are interested: Sheets and blocks will be up soon. Rule : When the total is on it. So here 7.50 * 3.40.
