In January 2006, India Security Press was nationalized and, together with other printers and coin manufacturers, became Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Ltd.

Until 1862, Indian stamps were printed at "The Survey of India", after which production was transferred to La Rue. In 1923, the government decided to print stamps in India and a government printing house was established in Nasik/Nashik. This location was chosen because of the relatively favorable climatic conditions (which was the reason that no stamps were printed in India between 1862 and 1924).

The printing house was built in 1924. Production started in November 1925.
