The Game Boy Advance SP (‘Special) is an improved version of the original model with a clamshell design. It is equipped with a rechargeable Lithium-ion battery and the display screen has front lighting. In 2005 a version with back lighting was released in the USA. Also in 2005, the Game Boy Micro was released. This is a smaller model that is not compatible with Game Boy Advance games. The Advance was succeeded by the actual model : the Nintendo DS.
