The GameCube was the successor of the Nintendo N64. It was introduced in the USA/Japan in 2001 and one year later in Europe. The GameCube was a competitor to the PlayStation 2 and Xbox. Contrary to the other manufacturers that adopted the DVD/CD Rom standard, Nintendo introduced a proprietary medium : the GameCube Disk (a mini DVD). Nintendo marketed the GameCube as a console for the kids with mainly family games. The GameCube was moderately successful (22 million units sold) but could not compete with the PS2.
