Details

Black Falcons Valkenburg was founded in 1981. The home base was the Geulhal. The successful women's department even gained fame abroad. The women's team became champions in 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1995, in 1991, 1992 and 1993 they finished in 2nd place. The Black Falcons also went through life as the Maastricht Ice Hockey Club (MIJC) and as Ice Hockey Combination Valkenburg aan de Geul (IJCV). In the founding year, top players such as Brian Sproxton, Rick van Gog, Danny Cuomo, Cor Hoogendoorn, Andy Tenbult and Jamie Conroy were attracted. The derby against Smoke Eaters attracted 1700 visitors, unique for the 2nd division. They finished the 1st year after 24 matches in 2nd place behind Brussels and ahead of The Smoke Eaters. Also in the battle for the Coupe der Lage Landen they finished in 2nd place behind Brussels and ahead of the Smoke Eaters. However, sponsors quickly dropped out because the 2nd division generated less attention than had been hoped for. The 1st team played 2 seasons in the 2nd and 2 years in the 3rd division. The ladies did play a significant role and continued to do so until 1995. De Geulhal was demolished in 2011. D.IJ.C. = Women's Ice Hockey Club. Two different editions of this ice hockey pin are known, one with a gold-coloured outer edge and one with a silver-coloured outer edge. This pin with a gold-coloured edge is issued by Black Falcons Valkenburg, year of issue unknown.
