Original political/editorial cartoon, 1942, by American editorial cartoonist Max P. Milians (1908-2005), probably for the Jewish Standard, with which he was associated for most of his life, although his work was also syndicated across America from the 1930s to the 1970s. Milians signed his cartoons with nine zeros as a punning underline. The cartoon shows a frantic Hitler whose own European car has crashed and who is trying to hitch a ride on a giant camel representing ‘Colonial France’, which is ignoring his pleas, while Mussolini’s car has crashed in Egypt, leaving him seriously damaged. The cartoon marks a clear turning point in WW2. In November 1942 Allied troops landed in the French colonies of Morocco and Algiers. Hitler badly needed the help of Vichy French forces to resist these offensives, as by then things were not going well for Germany on other fronts, for instance in Russia. However, after only a few days the French forces changed sides and this was the beginning of the end for German and Italian forces in Africa. Mussolini’s war had not been a success, in Africa or anywhere else, and by July 1943 he was ousted from power. Produced in ink and crayon over graphite on textured card; image area 30 x 24.5 cm, card size 36 x 27 cm. Title in pencil in upper margin. Signed lower left. A little age-toned, otherwise very good. On verso: ‘Lamp of Wisdom, to Throw New Light’, a cartoon commenting on the state of the educational system in the USA. Some adhesive remnants.
