Original political/editorial cartoon, 1948, by American editorial cartoonist Max P. Milians (1908-2005), probably for the Jewish Standard, with which he was associated for most of his life, although his work was also syndicated across America from the 1930s to the 1970s. Milians signed his cartoons with nine zeros as a punning underline. The cartoon shows ‘Father UN’ and ‘Mother Humanity’ abandoning their child, the ‘new Palestine Nation’ following the UN Partition Plan for Palestine in November 1947, while ‘power politics’ lurks in the shadows waiting to pounce. The implication is that the UN and the rest of the world have left those involved in the conflict to fight it out among themselves, which is precisely what happened in the years that followed. This seems like a rather unfair view of the UN, which has remained involved in the conflict, for instance by assisting refugees, and it could be argued there were limitations to what the Organization could do if the warring parties were not prepared to settle their differences peacefully. Produced in ink and crayon over graphite on textured card; image area 31 x 26.5 cm, card size 36.5 x 28.5 cm. Title in pencil in upper margin. Signed lower left. Verso blank except for note in pencil. Closed tear lower left margin, not affecting the image, otherwise clean and bright, very good condition
