Details

A miniature version of Rommeldam (a kind of Madurodam) has existed in Oisterwijk. Toonder's Studio's made the designs. The figures were by Jan Onkenhout from Amsterdam; they had to be approved by Toonder before they were placed. The fairytale town was built under pine trees on the edge of Oisterwijk, in the tea garden Gemullehoeken at the intersection of Gemullehoekenweg and Kivitslaan. It had an area of 3500 m2. The construction cost 150,000 guilders. This fairytale city was opened on June 29, 1955, with an opening speech by Godfried Bomans (Tom Poes in Rommeldam, recorded in Bezige Bij pocket "Always the same"). Part of the income was intended for the Prince Bernhard Fund. In addition to entrance fees, there was also income from advertising. The fairytale city was kept running by a manager with fourteen permanent staff. For the visitors there was a booklet for sale entitled "Rommeldam in Oisterwijk" containing a word of welcome from Mr Bommel, a tour and a description of the history of Rommeldam. In the fairytale town cars and trains drove, there was music, the buildings were lit at night and the street lights were on and the lighthouse was also functioning. In 1959 the fairytale town ceased to exist. A beautiful, illustrious period ended. In 1995 a complete overview work appeared with beautiful drawings, beautiful photos and unique images of Bommel merchandising. This beautiful overview work appeared in 5 editions: R1: the normal edition. Unnumbered, with dust jacket and blue linen cover. Edition: 1500 copies.
