Details
Charles of Anjou titles include: King of Sicily 1262–1282 King of Naples 1282–1285, King of Albania 1272–1285, King of Jerusalem 1277-1285, Prince of Achaea 1278–1285, Count of Provence and Forcalquier 1246–1285, and Count of Anjou and Maine 1247–1285. Unlike early Crusader coins, which imitated Muslim dinars, the Salut D'or (or "golden annunciation") may be the first truly Western coin of the region. It was designed by Charles I himself, and engraved by Giovanni Fortino. Charles I of Anjou, son of Louis VIII of France, Count of Provence and Anjou and King of Naples and Sicily, and a leader of the VII and VIII Crusades through which he became titular King of Jerusalem - as proclaimed in the obverse legend of this coin, with the "Split" arms of Jerusalem and Anjou.
