(Worship of the Moloch of War reinstated?) Original political cartoon on card in pen/brush and ink, 1939, published in De Indische Post, shows the angel of peace (‘pax’) being sacrificed by the god of war (‘Mars’) to the ‘moloch of war’ while satanic worshippers look on; the caption in the lower border states that ‘De vredesengel wordt geofferd’ (the angel of peace is being sacrificed). This cartoon was drawn very close to the outbreak of war, possibly as the world awaited the response of Britain and France to the German invasion of Poland. Written in pencil on verso are a number of alternative titles, which could be used if the crisis could be resolved before it was published, such as ‘Rescue was no longer possible’ or ‘she was saved at the last moment’. Card size 44 x 32 cm, image size 38 x 28 cm, signed lower left with captions in pencil in upper and lower borders, which also have alternative titles for the case war should break out before it was published. The cartoon has been folded into four at some point, otherwise in good condition.
