Original four-panel editorial cartoon in pen and ink for the Toronto Sunday World, 1915, shows various current aspects of World War I. The upper panel shows Henry Ford and his ‘peace ship’ which left the US a few days before this cartoon was produced (December 9). The peace ship was an amateur diplomatic mission to Europe to broker an end to World War I and was funded by the pacifist Ford, who also travelled with the mission. The whole expedition was plagued by in-fighting among the participants and was widely mocked by the press. The centre panels show the German Kaiser Wilhelm II and his Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg (also in favour of peace as long as they get what they want) and the lower panel shows the Kaiser and his allies as recipients of ‘notes’ from President Wilson following the sinking of the “Lusitania” and other non-military vessels by German and Austrian submarines. The German use of submarine warfare was one of the reasons the USA entered the war against Germany some 18 months later in 1917. Card size 47 x 35.5 cm (18.5 x 14 inch), image size 37 x 24 cm, signed lower right, printing instructions in lower border. In very good condition.
