Details
Romanus III was prefect of Constantinople when the dying emperor, Constantine VIII, forced him to marry his daughter Zoe become his successor. Though eager to make his mark as a ruler, he was unable to relieve the tax pressure or cut expenditure on the Constantinople churches. In 1030 he led a large army against the Muslim Aleppo, but he was defeated. His death by drowning was supposed to have been caused by Empress Zoe, who had turned her attentions to her eunuch Michael (who became the next emperor, Michael IV)
