In the 1970s, a "hunger cloth" was used in churches during the 40-day Easter Lent. The German development organization 'Misereor' therefore had artists from the Third World paint canvases with a biblical theme, applied to their local situation. In de jaren '70 werd in de kerken een "hongerdoek" gebruikt tijdens de vastenactie in de veertigdaagse tijd voor Pasen. De Duitse ontwikkelingsorganisatie 'Misereor' liet daarom kunstenaars uit de derde wereld doeken schilderen met een bijbels thema, toegepast op hun plaatselijke situatie.
