Original cartoon in pencil on textured wove paper for Punch Magazine, 1939, shows two elderly people on a cruise ship who have just been served a drink by a member of crew dressed as a nurse, to whom the question of the title is adressed and who looks most put out by the suggestion. A variation on the theme of sailors having a ‘wife in every port’, i.e. usually a local prostitute. Date stamped on verso 30 August 1939, days before the outbreak of WW2 in Europe. Published in the 20 September 1939 edition of Punch Magazine. Card size 38 x 28 cm (15 x 11 inch), image size 28 x 19.5 cm, signed lower right, caption written in green ink in lower border. Some browning along edges, otherwise in very good condition.
