Original cartoon in pencil on textured wove paper for Punch Magazine, 1939, shows an irate lady complaining to her companion about having to queue for a bus. This presumably refers to new rules introduced for bus queues (‘please form queue this side’) which more aggressive types would not have thought an improvement - queuing was (and is) exhausting, frustrating and tense and does not tend to bring out the best in people. Justified or not, the British have a reputation as civilized queuers, shaped particularly during World War Two, when queuing to get almost everything became a way of life (although this cartoon pre-dates the outbreak of war in Europe later that year). Date stamped 8 February 1939 on verso, published in the 15 February 1939 edition of Punch Magazine . Card size 38 x 28 cm, image size 26 x 19 cm, signed lower right, caption written in red ink in lower border. Staining around border edges, otherwise in very good condition.
