Original cartoon in pencil on grained paper for Punch Magazine, 1937, shows a house owner protesting to a new neighbour that his newly built house will block out the light to the existing house. 'Ancient Lights' is a 'right to light', which means that the owner of a building with windows which have received natural daylight for 20 years or more is entitled to forbid any building or other obstruction that would block out the natural daylight through those windows. The existing house is however clearly built in the modernist style and is unlikely to be more than 20 years old, much to the frustration of its owner. Date stamped 7 April 1937 on verso, published in the 16 June 1937 edition of Punch Magazine . Card size 39 x 28 cm, image size 28.5 x 19 cm, signed lower right, caption written in blue ink in lower border. Patch of browning along the lower border, otherwise in very good condition.
